We searched "dentist" from 49 locations across Etobicoke, from Long Branch up to Humber College.
At 40 of them, a different practice came out on top.
No practice held #1 at more than three locations.
For comparison, our Mississauga study used the same grid and spacing. There, 108 different practices held #1 across 151 locations, about 72%. In Etobicoke it was 40 of 49, about 82%.
If you own a dental practice here, that tells you something important:
There's no such thing as "ranking in Etobicoke." There's only ranking in your few kilometres of it.

One adjustment: Etobicoke's shape
Etobicoke is long and narrow, roughly 19 km north to south but only around 9 km across.
A square grid that covers it top to bottom also reaches well into Mississauga to the west, and into York and North York to the east.
So we classified every search point by the postal codes of the practices nearest to it. 49 search locations fell inside Etobicoke. Those are the focus of this article.

The other points weren't wasted. They tell us which outside practices are strong enough to compete for Etobicoke patients, which turned out to matter in several areas.
We also excluded 11 points that fell on Lake Ontario.
A study of market structure, not individual rankings
Any single Google ranking can change. Run the same search again and some positions will shift.
This study isn't about where one clinic ranked on one scan. It's about the shape of the market: how many practices can compete for the top spots, how far any one of them can reach, and how that changes from one part of Etobicoke to another.
Those patterns come from where practices are located and how established they are, and those things change slowly.
What I mean by "competitive"
The same definition I've used in every study.
An area isn't competitive just because it has a lot of dental offices. I look at two things:
Search competition: how many different practices reach Google's strongest positions.
Competitor strength: how established those practices are, including how many reviews a patient sees beside your name.
For search competition, we analyzed overlapping 3 × 3 windows, nine neighbouring search points each, and counted the unique #1, top-three and top-10 practices.
For competitor strength, we checked the current Google review count of every practice that reached the top three in the areas we profile: 116 practices in total.
Finding #1: At Royal York and Eglinton, three dental offices share one building
We centred the grid on Royal Crescent Family Dental: a 5.0 rating, about 77 reviews, and a location near the geographic middle of Etobicoke.
From its own front door, it ranked #2.
The practice in first place was Dental Denture & Implant Centre, about 150 metres away at 1436 Royal York Road. Third place went to Dr Paradina's practice, in the same building. Fifth went to Dr. Morry Murad, also in the same building.
That's four of the top five results within a short walk of each other.
Across the 49 Etobicoke search locations, Royal Crescent ranked:
#1: 0 locations
Top 3: 1 location (its own address)
Top 10: 3 locations
Its top-10 visibility ended about 1.6 km from the office.
That isn't a criticism of the practice. It's what happens when there are around 25 other practices within 2 km. The same thing happened to the 2,374-review practice we used as the centre point in Mississauga.
Finding #2: Nobody owns Etobicoke
Across the 49 Etobicoke search locations:
40 different practices held the #1 position
33 of them held #1 at exactly one location
The most #1 positions held by any single practice was 3
98 different practices appeared in the top three
191 different practices appeared in the top 10
In 10 different search windows inside Etobicoke, every one of the nine #1 positions went to a different practice.
The most competitive window, around Bloor Street and Royal York Road, produced 25 different top-three practices out of 27 possible, and 64 different practices in the top 10. That matches the Square One window in Mississauga almost exactly, the most crowded area we had measured until now.
Finding #3: The north and south are different markets
Etobicoke's dental offices aren't spread evenly. Of the 196 Etobicoke practices in our data, about two-thirds are south of roughly Dixon Road.
That shows up in how far practices can reach.
In the south, the strongest profiles stayed close to home. Toronto Lakeshore Dental has about 1,329 reviews, the most of any Etobicoke practice we checked. It reached the top 10 at just 4 Etobicoke search locations. (Part of that is geography: it sits on the lakeshore, near the southern edge of our grid, so some of its natural catchment is water.) Mystic Pointe Dental in Humber Bay, with about 796 reviews and 30 practices within 2 km, also reached the top 10 at 4.
In the north, the picture changes. West Humber Dentistry, with about 499 reviews, reached the top 10 at 19 of 49 Etobicoke search locations, roughly 39% of the area, and held top-10 positions up to 5.4 km from its office.
No practice in Mississauga came close to that. The widest top-10 reach there was about 16% of the map.
Woodbine Family Dental (about 756 reviews, top 10 at 11 locations) and Noor Dental (about 462, top 10 at 10) show the same pattern: practices in the less crowded middle and north of Etobicoke can build much larger footprints.
In south Etobicoke, a strong practice owns a neighbourhood. In north Etobicoke, a strong practice can own a district.
Finding #4: Distance matters more here, but it still doesn't decide everything
In Etobicoke, the closest practice to the search point ranked:
#1 at 45% of locations
in the top three at 73%
Both figures are higher than in Mississauga (38% and 61%). The median #1 result was just 0.62 km from the search point, and 71% of #1 results were within 1 km.
So proximity matters a lot in Etobicoke. But at more than half of locations, Google still picked something other than the nearest dentist as the best result.
That's consistent with how Google describes local ranking: relevance, distance and prominence, weighed together.
Finding #5: Etobicoke's borders leak, in both directions
Across all 49 Etobicoke locations, Etobicoke practices took 94% of #1 positions and 93% of top-three positions. So most of the time, Etobicoke patients see Etobicoke dentists.
But the edges tell a different story.
In the northwest, around Humber College and Albion, 8 of 22 top-three practices were outside Etobicoke, in Vaughan, Woodbridge and Mississauga's Malton area.
Around Sherway and The West Mall, 6 of 21 top-three practices were in Mississauga.
Around Rexdale and Islington, about 6 of 20 came from North York and York, mostly along Jane Street and Weston Road.
In our Mississauga study, the Dixie / Dundas East area was where Etobicoke practices broke through. The Sherway data shows the same border working the other way.
If your practice is within a couple of kilometres of Etobicoke's edge, your competitive set almost certainly includes clinics in another city.
