North Media analyzed 507 Google Maps search locations across Kelowna, West Kelowna and Lake Country for the search term “dentist.” We then added a 169-point South Okanagan comparison, bringing the complete analysis to 676 measured search locations. The results show just how dramatically a dental practice’s competitive radius can change from one Okanagan market to another.
A quick note before you start: this is a data-heavy article and will probably take you about 5–10 minutes to get through. If you own a dental practice in the Okanagan, are considering buying one, or are thinking about opening a new clinic here, I think it will be worth your time.
The Short Version
If you only have two minutes, here is what we found.
We searched “dentist” from hundreds of different geographic locations across the Okanagan.
The difference was enormous.
Practice / market tested | #1 across grid | Top 3 | Top 10 | Outside Top 20 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Orchard Park Dental — Kelowna | 0.6% | 3.0% | 42.0% | 19.5% |
True Dental — West Kelowna | 6.5% | 28.4% | 44.4% | 33.7% |
Lake Country Family Dentistry — Lake Country | 37.9% | 70.4% | 77.5% | 13.6% |
Okanagan Dental — Okanagan Falls | 79.3% | 86.4% | 96.4% | 0% |
The same generic search — “dentist” — produced four very different geographic ranking patterns.
Our biggest takeaway:
The denser the competitive dental market becomes, the smaller the geographic area a single practice appears able to dominate.
That does not mean competition itself is a direct Google ranking factor.
Google says its local results are primarily influenced by relevance, distance and prominence. A business farther from the searcher can still outrank a closer competitor when Google's systems consider it a better result.
What our data demonstrates is what those factors can look like in the real world when dozens of relevant dental practices compete within a relatively small geographic area.
And Kelowna is a very good example.
Why We Did This Study
I speak with dental practice owners regularly, and one of the most common assumptions I hear is:
“If my practice ranks well on Google, people across the city should be able to find me.”
That is not necessarily how local search works.
Someone searching “dentist” in Rutland can receive a very different set of practices from someone making the same search in Downtown Kelowna, Glenmore, the Lower Mission or West Kelowna.
So instead of checking a ranking from one location, we wanted to see the market spatially.
How quickly does a dentist's visibility deteriorate as the searcher moves away?
Can a strong clinic rank beyond its immediate neighbourhood?
And does that pattern change when the density of competing practices changes?
To answer that, we mapped it.
How the Kelowna Dental Market Study Was Conducted
The data for this study was collected on August 25, 2026.
For every scan we used exactly the same primary search term:
dentist
We then created a:
13 × 13 geographic search grid
1-mile spacing between grid points
169 individual search locations per scan
For the primary Kelowna-area analysis, we tested:
Orchard Park Dental & Implant Centre — Kelowna
True Dental — West Kelowna
Lake Country Family Dentistry — Lake Country
That's:
169 × 3 = 507 Kelowna-area search locations.
We then ran an identical scan around:
Okanagan Dental — Okanagan Falls
That gives us a useful lower-density comparison and increases the full dataset to:
676 measured search locations
One important clarification:
676 search locations does not mean 676 consumers conducted searches.
These are geographic ranking measurements showing what Google's local results looked like when the same search was evaluated from different points on the map.
This study is therefore a snapshot of local search visibility, not consumer search-volume research.
Finding #1: Kelowna Proper Is Extremely Fragmented
Let's start with the most interesting market.
For the central Kelowna scan, we used Orchard Park Dental & Implant Centre as our reference practice.
It is centrally located along Harvey Avenue.
You might assume a well-established dental practice near the centre of the city would have a fairly large ranking radius for a broad term like “dentist.”
That's not what we found.
Out of 169 locations:
#1: 1 location
Top 3: 5 locations
Top 5: 18 locations
Top 10: 71 locations
Top 20: 136 locations
Outside the Top 20: 33 locations
In percentage terms, Orchard Park Dental ranked:
#1 across just 0.6% of the grid.
It reached the Top 3 across only 3.0%.
Yet it remained within the Top 10 across 42% of the map.
That's an important distinction.
The clinic was not invisible.
Rather, there were simply a lot of other practices capable of outranking it depending on where the searcher was standing.
The #1 Position Changed Constantly Across Kelowna
This is where the study gets much more interesting.
Across the same 169-point Kelowna scan, the practice holding the #1 position changed repeatedly.
The leading practices included:
Dental practice | #1 grid locations |
|---|---|
Orchard Smiles Dentistry | 36 |
Knox Mountain Dentistry | 30 |
Creekside Dental Clinic | 28 |
Quail Ridge Dental | 18 |
Vine Dental | 10 |
True Dental | 8 |
Kettle Valley Family Dental | 8 |
Lakeview Dental | 5 |
Lifestyle Dentistry | 4 |
Rutland Dental Centre | 4 |
Discover Dental | 4 |
No single dentist came close to owning the entire city.
Instead, Kelowna looked like a collection of overlapping local dental territories.
That is probably one of the most useful ways for a Kelowna dentist to think about Google Maps.
You aren't simply competing for:
“Kelowna.”
You're competing for dozens of individual search locations inside Kelowna.
Finding #2: West Kelowna Looks Different — But It Is Still Highly Competitive
Next, we moved across the lake and scanned around True Dental in West Kelowna.
True Dental performed substantially better close to its home market.
Across 169 locations:
#1: 11 locations
Top 3: 48
Top 5: 59
Top 10: 75
Top 20: 112
Outside Top 20: 57
That means True Dental held:
#1 visibility across 6.5% of the grid
and
Top-3 visibility across 28.4%.
That's considerably stronger than the 3.0% Top-3 coverage we measured for Orchard Park Dental.
But West Kelowna was far from a winner-take-all market.
Look at who captured #1 positions within this scan:
Dental practice | #1 grid locations |
|---|---|
Knox Mountain Dentistry | 48 |
Westside Dental Centre | 22 |
Creekside Dental Clinic | 17 |
Carrington Dental Centre | 16 |
True Dental | 11 |
Kettle Valley Family Dental | 9 |
Discover Dental | 8 |
Vine Dental | 6 |
Lakeview Dental | 6 |
Quail Ridge Dental | 5 |
Again, geography matters enormously.
And something else became obvious.
Crossing the lake matters.
True Dental was much stronger throughout its immediate West Kelowna market.
As the search grid moved east into the denser Kelowna market, its visibility deteriorated substantially.
I'm careful about calling the lake itself a ranking factor because it isn't.
But geographically, the lake and bridge help create two distinct concentrations of businesses and consumers.
Google is then choosing among different sets of relevant, nearby and prominent practices as the searcher's location moves.
For a dentist, the practical effect can look very much like a market boundary.
Finding #3: Lake Country Has a Completely Different Ranking Pattern
Then we moved north.
This time we analyzed Lake Country Family Dentistry.
The difference was dramatic.
Across 169 search locations:
#1: 64
Top 3: 119
Top 5: 121
Top 10: 131
Top 20: 146
Outside Top 20: 23
That's:
37.9% #1 coverage
and
70.4% Top-3 coverage.
Compare that with the Kelowna scan.
Kelowna reference practice: 3.0% Top 3
Lake Country reference practice: 70.4% Top 3
Same keyword.
Same grid size.
Same spacing.
Completely different ranking footprint.
Even More Interesting: Direction Mattered
Lake Country Family Dentistry maintained extremely strong visibility as the grid moved north and through the lower-density areas surrounding the practice.
But moving south toward Kelowna introduced significantly more competition.
This is one of the clearest patterns in the entire dataset.
If rankings were determined by distance alone, we would expect them to deteriorate relatively uniformly in every direction.
They didn't.
Instead, visibility deteriorated much faster toward areas containing stronger concentrations of competing dental practices.
That's consistent with how Google describes local ranking.
Distance matters.
But Google is simultaneously evaluating the relevance and prominence of the alternatives available around the searcher.
Finding #4: Okanagan Falls Shows What a Less Fragmented Dental Market Can Look Like
I wanted a comparison outside the immediate Kelowna market.
So we ran exactly the same 13×13 scan around Okanagan Dental in Okanagan Falls.
The result was almost the inverse of Kelowna.
Across 169 points, Okanagan Dental ranked:
#1: 134 locations
Top 3: 146
Top 5: 149
Top 10: 163
Top 20: 169
In other words:
79.3% of the entire grid was #1.
And the practice appeared within the Top 20 at:
100% of all measured locations.
Only three practices captured a #1 position anywhere in this particular scan:
Dental practice | #1 grid locations |
|---|---|
Okanagan Dental | 134 |
MV Dental Centre | 23 |
Penticton Dental Centre | 12 |
As the scan moved toward Penticton, rankings became more competitive.
But through much of the area surrounding Okanagan Falls, one practice was able to maintain extraordinary visibility.
Put the Four Markets Side by Side
This is probably the single most important table in the study.
Market | Reference practice | #1 | Top 3 | Top 10 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Kelowna | Orchard Park Dental | 0.6% | 3.0% | 42.0% |
West Kelowna | True Dental | 6.5% | 28.4% | 44.4% |
Lake Country | Lake Country Family Dentistry | 37.9% | 70.4% | 77.5% |
Okanagan Falls | Okanagan Dental | 79.3% | 86.4% | 96.4% |
